On October 4, 1975 at approximately 8:40 am, Officer Corter was tracking a sedan whose owner was wanted on warrants. The vehicle had been spotted on the H-1 freeway minutes earlier and Officer Corter and other officers began tracking the route of this vehicle and headed toward the Pali tunnels.
At some point prior to the tunnel, Officer Corter lost control of his vehicle on the wet asphalt and collided with a rock wall separating the windward bound tunnel from the town bound tunnel.
Officer Corter suffered serious injuries from the collision and later died at the hospital.
