In the early morning of May 22, 1901, Officer John Wulbers was on patrol when he observed a runaway horse near King Street an Asylum Road. Officer Wulbers was able to mount the horse but was unable to gain control as the animal bolted for several city blocks. The horse ran onto the sidewalk on South Street, where Officer Wulbers was knocked off the animal after striking a telephone pole.
Officer Wulbers sustained head injuries and was taken to the hospital where he later died.
