On August 8, 1923 prior to 6 a.m., Officer James Keonaona received a call regarding an escaped convicted murderer. Officer Keonaona dressed quickly to investigate the information he received from the recent caller. As Officer Keonaona left his house he observed the escapee down a ways from his residence and was able to apprehend him. While in Officer Keonaona's custody, the escapee reached in his pocket as though retrieving a cigarette, and pulled out a gun and fired a shot at Officer Keonaona. Officer Keonaona was struck and killed instantly.
